Dorm Desks
When looking for a dorm desk for your dorm room or apartment; function should be your highest priority. While a solid wood, mahogany desk is beautiful, it simply isn’t practical for college life.
The first thing you’ll want to look for in a desk that you will be bringing back and forth to college is not only easy assembly, but easy disassembly. You won’t need to take apart each and every piece but enough of it to make it easy to transport home again. Look for a dorm desk made from light-weight materials that is solid but not bulky.
Desks that are marketed as “computer desks” typically have storage space underneath for a CPU. If you are bringing a laptop to college with you, you may not need this extra feature and the space beneath can be better used as a shelf for storing other items. Similarly, a pull out keyboard tray typical on computer desks is only worth having if you will be bringing an extra keyboard to campus with you.
Although you may not need the space for a CPU or an extra keyboard, a shelf for a printer is a huge plus. Being able to print in your room will make completing those late night papers much less painful. If your dorm desk does not have a shelf dedicated for a printer, allow space for a smaller piece of furniture right next to the desk for it.
Instead of a full-sized desk, you may want to consider a computer “workstation” or “computer cart”. These typically have a smaller work space than a traditional dorm desk but are much more flexible. They are often easy to assemble, the height is adjustable as are the shelves, and the wheels make it very easy to move around. Although you won’t have much extra space on these carts for desks supplies, etc. you may find that the small foot print is exactly what you need.
